Every culture, including ours, rendered hideous forms of violence toward each other and the Indians. Let us not forget Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. My point, mankind is capable of both violence and beauty. I want to focus on beauty and kindness.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19102494.post-1150127936281671352006-06-12T08:58:00.000-07:002006-06-12T08:58:00.000-07:00David, To further add to my comments above, I am ...David, To further add to my comments above, I am additionally convinced that beauty is the answer to the deepest longings of the human psyche.

The ancient studies of the Vedas in India led to many variations of the "walk in Beauty"

A mantra traditionally given by Vedanta is as follows"

May all beings above me, below me, to my right to my left, in front of me and behind me find peace, happiness and illumination.

This is the first mental saying as one begins meditation in silence.

arturAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19102494.post-1149985658956640912006-06-10T17:27:00.000-07:002006-06-10T17:27:00.000-07:00David, It is apparent to me that you are emphasizi...David, It is apparent to me that you are emphasizing that the search is an inside job. I love your grasp. Actually your post so touched me that I couldn't stop the tears. My wife saw it and gave me some big hugs. Yet in every culture we can also find the good -- wisdom, love, and knowledge. The purpose of my post is not to idealize the Navajos, but rather to show one aspect of their beliefs that may resonate with people confronting the emotional challenges of leukemia and mortality.David Arensonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13876562687586184006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19102494.post-1149697037403175462006-06-07T09:17:00.000-07:002006-06-07T09:17:00.000-07:00The quest for beauty and peace is part of many cul...The quest for beauty and peace is part of many cultures, as it apparently is in the Navajo nation. However, there has been and continues to be violence in that group, as in every human society.

Violent raids, wars, rapes, and slavery were part of the past for the Navajos as was the case for many cultures. White and Indian men who were captured were often tortured before being killed. White and other captured women were made into slaves.

Sometimes we tend to gloss over the ugly parts of a culture and idealize them when we should acknowledge the entire picture of a culture.

It would be nice to have only beauty, peace and truth, but that ain't the way it is, so far.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
